What is EGOI?
The European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI) is a new programming competition just for girls. Inspired by the success of the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad we want to create a similar competition in Informatics. The format of the competition will be similar to established competitions such as the International Olympiad in Informatics or the Central European Olympiad in Informatics.
The main part of the event will be two contests. During the contest the contestants will solve challenging problems by designing and implementing efficient algorithms. The competition is accompanied by social events such as excursions to give the participants time to get to know each other.
The first edition of EGOI will be held in June 2021 in Zurich, Switzerland. It is organized by the Swiss Olympiad in Informatics.
In the following years, the competition will be hosted by a different participating country each year.
In many countries, far less women than men decide to study or work in the field of Computer Sciences. This gender gap is even more pronounced in the Olympiad in Informatics.
The goal of EGOI is to provide a platform for young women to enjoy and deepen their interest in Computer Science. But why is a gender-separate event necessary?
To encourage young women to participate: The stereotype of Computer Science being something only for men persists. Many young women do not even consider a participation, even though they would have talent and would enjoy it. This is where our competition comes in: girls who may not have the courage to participate at an Olympiad in Informatics feel included and directly addressed. This allows them to find the self-confidence to participate.
To create female role models: The participants get to know other female Computer Scientists and can find female role models for themselves. This is important, as most attachment figures are male (e.g. teachers, professors, Computer Science stars).
To strengthen self-confidence and acceptance: One goal is for women in Computer Science to utilize their full potential. To achieve this, one needs a sense of achievement, self-confidence, and acceptance. We hope to promote these aspects with our project. We want to highlight the great achievements that young women are capable of. Exciting tasks that cater to their interests will stimulate thinking and help strengthen their joy in algorithms.
To organize EGOI we rely on the support of our generous partners. This includes, but is not limited to, financial contributions, providing logistic resources (e.g. rooms, computers), communication (e.g. newspaper articles, television reports), volunteers (e.g. to guide delegations), tech talks, and so on.
If your organization wants to support EGOI in any way, please get in touch with us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We are happy to discuss any suggestions you have and can give you more information about the project.
For Interested Delegations
If you are interested in sending a delegation to EGOI, please contact us at email@example.com. If you would like to receive updates please subscribe to one or both of the following mailing lists:
- EGOI-updates: low
traffic mailing list for important updates, e.g. registration opening
- EGOI-discuss: discussion mailing list to discuss possible future hosts, details about
the competition etc.
If you would like to participate at EGOI as a contestant, please contact your national organization organizing the selection for the International Olympiad in Informatics. Ask them whether they plan to participate. They can give you more information on how you can qualify to participate at EGOI.
The requirements for participants is the same as for the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI Regulations, Section S2.5). Additionally, the participant has to be female.
For questions please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. We are happy to provide you with more information about the project.
